Anna Stuart | A Thick Present

In November of this year, Anna Stuart’s exhibition A Thick Present opened in Ormond Art Studios’ Project Space.

Encompassing a variety of media, this body of work is the visual exploration of a philosophy where parameters rather than outcomes are set for works. Interested in the potential materials can hold, this methodology has taken many forms, most recently through the exploration of the alchemic qualities of salt and wax. Taking inspiration from the writing of Donna Haraway, A Thick Present is a visual investigation into time, phenomena and the potential chain of actions and unknown reactions that occur when living systems come into contact. Driving this body of work is Anna’s fascination with deep time and a desire to explore new areas of art making as a way of observing and engaging with the world.

Anna Stuart is a visual artist based in Dublin, having recently graduated with First Class Honours from BA Art at IADT, Dun Laoghaire. Anna has exhibited work both in Ireland and abroad, including solo show Entropy (2021) at Tasku Gallery, Helsinki, as well as group shows ; Window Series (Ormond Art Studios, 2023), OnShow (IADT, 2022), Propositions (IADT, 2022), Peripheries in Parallax (Aalto University, 2021) and Tuntemattomat, (University of the Arts, Helsinki, 2020). Ormond Art Studios is an artist-led initiative in Dublin city and is a platform for emerging visual artists. It supports the development of arts practice through affordable studio provision, critical discourse and space for events, residencies and exhibitions. The physical studios consists of eight individual artist's spaces along with a separate area that serves as the Project Space. The Project Space offers scope for work on a larger scale, embodied practice and experimentation. It is in this space that feedback sessions, events and exhibitions happen. We believe that critical discourse is hugely beneficial to developing a professional arts practice and essential to a dynamic arts community. Ormond Art Studios encourages members to open up their practise to peer critique and facilitates lively feedback sessions, residencies, and information/skills sharing initiatives. We believe in collaboration and connect with other creative initiatives to develop a network of support for artist‐led endeavours in Dublin and beyond.
