Ormond Studios member, Kieran Gallagher, representing St Oliver’s community school Drogheda, was part of a panel of invited speakers discussing different perspectives from the arts and education sectors at the Virtually There symposium on the 16th of October.
Kids’ Own and Visual Art Education in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, hosted the national symposium for the education & arts sectors on Thursday 16 October 2014 on the theme “Virtually There? Are we on the road to meaningful arts experiences with children in schools?”
As part of Kids’ Own’s national Virtually There Tour – funded through the Arts Council’s Touring & Dissemination of Work Award – This special event was hosted for artists, teachers, practitioners and sector professionals with an interest in current arts in education practice. Through the symposium, participants were invited to engage with the Virtually There touring exhibition and to question and interrogate how far we have come along the road towards meaningful arts experiences with children in schools.
The day included presentations by artists and teachers involved in the Virtually There project, and a panel discussion with representatives from the arts and education sectors, including Helen O’Donoghue, Head of Education at IMMA, Artist Maree Hensey, Eamonn Mitchell, School Placement and Visual Art Education at Mary Immaculate College, Liz Coman, Arts Officer, Dublin City Council, and Mary Nunan, Dancer & Choreographer and former Chair of the Arts Council’s Special Committee on Arts & Education.
